Lafayette Charter School Support
Lafayette Academy Charter School Support Committee members participate at the school every week, providing teacher support to 1st grade teachers, fostering literacy by reading to students, and helping them with math.
The committee members' weekly attendance at the school is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling - it goes to the very heart of part of the Junior League of New Orleans' mission to create better communities.
Another rewarding project includes the school's Super Store. Students who exhibit good behavior are rewarded with "Super Tickets", which can be used to buy special items at the Super Store. The Super Store has been a great success and was even the focus of a Times-Picayune article.
The Committee provides several Teacher Appreciation lunches throughout the year in an effort to let the teachers know that the work they do does not go unnoticed.
Other big projects for the year include: READ for the Record with the 1st grade, Read Across America (a Dr. Seuss Celebration) with the 2nd grade, PreK and Kindergarten class read events, and Dinner with Principal Mickey events, which are for students and their family to encourage parental involvement.
The committee also promotes and supports various student field trips to enhance their educational experience.
