Power Ties is a career awareness program that links professionals from various occupations with eighth-grade students. This program was created by New Orleans Outreach and operates in partnership with the Junior League and the Young Leadership Council. The program consists of a series of workshops, held at the school site, in which volunteers teach students how to fill out a job application, write a resume, and dress for success. After the workshops are completed, a career fair and luncheon is held at a special venue.
The Power Ties project takes four sessions to complete. Junior League volunteers teach seminars at Green Charter School every other week, using a set curriculum that includes writing resumes and cover letters, understanding appropriate office behavior, and practicing general business and interviewing skills.
The Power Ties program caps off the training with a career fair at a special off-campus site. Mock "potential employers" meet with students to test their newly-learned interviewing skills. After the interviews, students are treated to a business luncheon and uplifting speaker. Even during the luncheon, students showcase business dining etiquette and conversation techniques.
